What is Ambien?
Ambien, also known as the generic name Zolpidem, is a sedative
primarily used for the treatment of trouble sleeping. It usually works
within 15 minutes, and has a short half-life of two to three hours. It
is a sedative drug that is prescribed to treat insomnia (difficulty
falling asleep or staying asleep). It is a strong sleeping pill that can be used to help people who suffer form insomnia.

Precautions before Taking Zolpidem
There are precautions that must be considered before deciding to
take it. In certain circumstances, It may not be the most suitable
choice of drug. Ask a doctor regarding your health suitability in taking
it as a treatment for insomnia. If you have any of the following
circumstances, seek medical advice:
- History of alcoholism or drug abuse
- Pregnant or planning to be pregnant
- Has a breathing condition (bronchitis, asthma or emphysema)
- History of liver or kidney disease
- Has myasthenia gravis (nerve disorder resulting to weakening of muscles)
- Allergies to any of the ingredients
- Has recurring personality disorder or depression
- Has sleep apnea
- Elderly
In very rare cases, taking Ambien can result to adverse reactions
including swelling of the lips, face, throat and tongue or have
difficulty in breathing. It is also advised that it should not be used
continually for more than 4 weeks because it can lead to withdrawal
symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, anxiety and stomach cramps. Known as a
short term treatment for insomnia, there is a possibility of having
problems sleeping once you stop using it. It is called a ‘rebound
insomnia’ that eventually subsides after one to two days. Always consult
your doctor regarding the use of this sleeping medication.
What is the suggested Dosage?
One 10 mg tablet of Zolpidem is the recommended dosage for treatment
of insomnia. Another pill that is good for sleep, as well as treating
insomnia, is Zopiclone.
Swallow the pill as a whole with water before sleeping. Remember not to
chew the pills because it can lead to rapid release of the medication.
For people with liver problems or elderly patients, a lower dosage of
5mg per pill is advised. Ambien medication should be taken by people who
are
